Never Ending Kiss

It was time.  The glow from outside was becoming more intense.  Mark stepped to the window and pulled back the blackout curtains.  There was still a bit of blue left in the sky and upon the lake, but it was quickly being replaced by the yellows, oranges, golds, and reds of the approaching end.  Or was it going to be a new beginning?  He shook his head.  He was tired of considering such metaphysical thoughts.

He let the curtain drop back into place; the harsh light was blocked but not completely obliterated.  The inside of the cabin was cast in an eerie twilight.  In the kitchen, Mark washed out his coffee cup and placed it in the drying rack.  He then strode down the hall to the bedroom where Sarah was tidying up.  He looked in to see the bed made, clothes put away, and his wife at the art deco vanity staring at the vase of dried flowers.  He quietly stepped to her and put his hands on her shoulders.  Her eyes raised up to focus on his reflection in the mirror.  A single tear drop slid down her right cheek.

Sarah stood up, turned and embraced Mark.  Hand in hand, they retraced Mark’s steps down the hall.  When he opened the front door the indoor twilight was immediately replaced by the approaching glow.  It’s heat was felt by the lone couple.

They made their way down to the boat dock and sat down.  Their feet dangled into the water creating ripples that expanded out across the quiet lake.  Light from the ever increasing glow reflected off the undulating waves sending diamond like bursts into the sky.

The air was getting hotter, thicker as the sky became more fierce.  Ripples returned over the lake, stronger, more frequent.  Mark put his arm around Sarah and drew her in to his side.  She turned her face up to his and he bent down to kiss her.  The glow crested the horizon.  The lake vibrated until waves leaped up and licked at the couple’s legs. The light, blinding, fiery, cast them in an eternal embrace.
